Zwelinzima Vavi has called on Jacob Zuma to take legal action against Thabo Mbeki over recent remarks questioning the legitimacy of Zuma’s conviction. Vavi, the former COSATU general secretary, expressed his concerns on social media, warning that allegations without evidence should result in lawsuits. His comments followed Mbeki’s remarks about Zuma’s trial during a recent ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Gauteng. In a tweet, Vavi stated, “If anyone were to label me a spy, I would take legal action, just as Derek Hanekom did.” He referenced Hanekom’s successful defamation lawsuit against Zuma, where the accuser had to pay due to a lack of evidence. Vavi emphasized that insulting someone without legal proof does not prove the truth of the accusations and questioned whether Mbeki would face similar legal consequences for his comments regarding Zuma’s trial.

Vavi condemned political accusations made without evidence, stressing that they should have legal consequences. He highlighted that legal action is a powerful tool to challenge misinformation and protect reputations, drawing a parallel to Hanekom’s defamation victory. His call for accountability reflects frustration with the political environment in South Africa, particularly within the ANC.
