Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba has warned that actions will be taken against Polokwane International Airport’s board members and CEO if the airport’s financial situation doesn’t improve. Ramathuba says they have established an inter-ministerial committee that will monitor the financial situation at the airport every quarter. Ramathuba says if the financials of the airport do not improve within 12 months those leading the entity will face consequences.

Mokgadi Matli, Polokwane International Airpot CEO

The Polokwane airport CEO Mokgadi Matli says they have requested a bailout of over 200 million rand to implement a 5-year turnaround strategy for the airpot. The money will assist improve the Airpot infrastructure and tourism attractions. The Polokwane Airpot which is under the Provincial Transport Department has been failing to make a turnover for years, relying on government bailouts.

Last week, flights were unable to land at the airport during bad weather conditions due to a dysfunctional Instrument Landing System. The airport lost over 40 thousand rands last week after six flights were cancelled. The airport management has requested an additional 30 million rand from Treasury to procure the Instrument Landing System.
